I think I would not worry about whether it has been invented or not. I think the idea is to be creative and original. I would think that your idea is unique enough and as long as you came up with it on your own, you should be okay.
Is this supposed to a coffee table?
As far as what should go in it, whatever normally goes in a fish tank. (sorry I don't know anything about fish tanks.)
Will it be lighted? Will it have all the appropriate functional features of a regular fish tank?
Another important thing is to make sure you are following the project guidelines.

Got the top for the table and so we get to test it out at school but remember that the teacher made us finish ahead of time incase there are mistakes or something backfires. As I theing the sides will fall off when you fill it with water. AND WEHERE IS MY PUMP I ORDERED!!!?????!!!!!
